Unit Summary

So here we are, the end of semester one and time has definitely flown by!

We have now been here fifteen weeks and in someways it feels like I'm still in my first lesson, but in reality I'm not. I have now dipped my toes into the many different fields of journalism.

First up was online with Simon, we learnt how to create a blog and edit content to post on it. If I'm honest I didn't really enjoy online, I'm grateful of the knowledge I have learnt from it as it will no doubt be useful in the coming years as everything moves towards the internet, but I have to say it is not my favorite past time.

Next came print with Steve, with these lessons came more knowledge on adapting images using Photoshop (for use in newspapers) as well as updating my knowledge on the program Indesign, having been a graphic design student for two years at college I was already quite familiar with these programs, but it was fun and interesting to learn even more about them and use them for my work.

After print we moved on to radio with Martin, this is what I had been eagerly waiting for since the day I received my acceptance letter. As I want to be a radio presenter when I leave uni this is the lesson that interested me the most. I loved learning all about vox pops and sound editing and I loved the time spent in the studio working on "finding my voice" and putting together a news program.

And finally came TV with Sean Walsh...I put his full name as the first thing I learnt in his lesson was to NOT FORGET HIS NAME. The thing I liked about Sean Walsh's lessons was the way he treated us as news editors in a news room as apposed to "students" he gave us our brief for the day, gave us the equipment (after making us fill out the ever so important health and safety forms which feel like they are ten pages long) and sent us out to capture footage before bringing it back to the TV studio and editing it into a package. We learnt all about P2C's (piece to cameras), B rolls and A rolls and what a rush is...we also learnt that in journalism time is everything.
  • if you're five minutes early you're on time
  • if you're on time you're late
  • and if you're late, the you're locked out!
Over all I have really enjoyed this semester, I have enjoyed learning all about the different types of journalism and I am really looking forward to next semester when I can develop my skills further in my chosen fields.

The Royal Wedding

As part of our TV introduction we had to make a mini TV package using what we'd learnt in the lessons, the topic was the Royal Wedding and we had to get the opinions of staff and students around campus...here's what I came up with...

Voxpop Task

As the temperature gets colder and the nights get darker it is apparent that Christmas is around the corner. Another possible reason that we are aware of the festive season's approach is by the many bright lights and colours filling shop windows and our streets. In light of this Sarah and I took to Farnham town to ask people their views on why Christmas seems to be getting earlier each year...here's what they have to say...

30 September 2010

Ok so nearly at the end of another week. Been here three weeks now and finally starting to get my head around everything.

Plans for the Student Radio Station are well under way, our main focus at this point is to generate funding for it as we need to buy access to the server, web space and a licence.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday afternoon at 3pm and our main topic will be ideas to raise money. As well as finding who is available to put in the leg work to get it up and running. Joe Blogs could have a radio show...but until there is a Radio Station set up no one can do anything.

In other news I have finally got a date to start my driving lessons again so if your out this Monday between 1 and 3 I'd watch out haha...hopefully will be ready to take my test soon :)

That is all I have to say at the minute so peace out!
